Survivors of Catholic Clergy Sex Abuse Voice Hope After Meeting with the Pontiff

Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope after their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

The board president, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the Pope's choice to meet with them so soon in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Global Strict Policy Advocated

The group is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This approach has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is resistance," they stated.

Legacy Issue

The new Pope, who assumed the position in May, has taken on this persistent issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic summit on child abuse within the institution and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For the representative, who uses they/them pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the measure is deeply meaningful. The North American advocate shared they were victimized by a priest who was later moved between different parishes.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Multiple members of the organization, which represents survivors and supporters from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

Hickey noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal experience and appeared "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The organization is hoping that changes to canon law will enable the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have spoken with specialists and compiled documents that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in reviewing it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recently released church-ordered report highlighted the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also noted that victims consistently emphasized the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for negligence and concealment."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they informed the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a relationship and continuing to build that bond is a move in the right direction," they stated.

Hickey concluded that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the narrative concludes - he appreciated that."
