Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased transparency.
“People are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some are not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled certain conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
