Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
