The atmosphere at their home stadium was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the management had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or imploding.
Matteo's Unexpected Presence
One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to stay there for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.
He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."
Discovering His True Position
It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the nature of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
