EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
